A few notes on getting your site ready for your first few posts ツ
1. Access your WordPress admin
To reach your admin dashboard, go to your site and add /login at the end. This will take you to your login page, and then straight to the WordPress admin interface, where you’ll manage your pages, posts, categories, and theme settings.
2. Choose your theme
For now, I recommend using the Twenty Twenty theme. It’s clean, stable, and ideal for learning how WordPress handles templates and layout. Read my notes for more details ツ
3. Edit your About page
To start with, update the default About page:
- introduce yourself
- explain what your site is for
- add anything else you feel fits ツ
This page helps visitors ~ including tutors ~ understand who you are and what you’re working on.
4. Update categories
WordPress starts you off with a category called Uncategorized. This should be edited ~ I’d use it as a generic ‘blog’ category to post anything like notes or maybe lists of links you want to go back to etc.
To plan ahead, I would recommend creating one category per module. For easy copy/paste:
- Coding for Web Content
- UX Design for Web
- Dynamic Web Content
- Inclusive Design for Web
- Major Project
These categories won’t appear on your site until you publish posts in them, but setting them up now prepares you for upcoming tasks (including the homework David set).
6. Edit your menu
Go to:
Left panel → Appearance → Menus
Add:
- your About page
- your module categories
This gives your site a clear structure and makes it easier for visitors to navigate your work.
